if Hip Hop should Die tomorrow…….

if Hip Hop Should Die tomorrow

was a 12 panel installation of an illustrated timeline chronicling the historical development of Hip Hop. Hip Hop is more than a fashion statement, its more than just the 4 elements, its more than just “a black thing”, it’s an artistic movement that as spanned into the everyday of art & culture. by visually placing the historical roots of this art movement in front of the masses i hoped to show how everyone has a little bit of Hip Hop in their lives.

Life on the Hot Lunch Line : original artwork by Lynley Farris

Three years ago I had a realization that I had two major purposes in life; 1. I need to make art,  2. I need to feed people.  If I made these two activities the priority in my life it was all the happiness i needed.  On my return back to Springfield, my job quest led me to the roll of a lunch lady.  In all likely hood it was probably do to, one to many whiskies, that led me to apply for the job but, I believe it was for the dare I say it, the romantic idea of the lunch lady that was the driving factor.

The world of hairnets, mystery meat, and little old ladies has been as much of a culture shock as I think I would have experienced if I had joined the Peace Corps.  What I discovered about the daily happenings of a lunch lady is what I put into my artwork, the whimsical, the sad, the frustrations, the fussy old women, and the cocky little kids, the things that keep me putting my apron on each day in hopes that by the end of my shift I’ll have one more inspiration for my art.

By looking at these works I hope the viewer learns the intensity of what it means to be a lunch lady, the fun and whimsy of the experience and perhaps also discovers a new appreciation for the ladies that are the center and life of a school.

put your butt here!

my latest creation, which of course is now available on etsy.  i love how ever time i go to buy fringe the ladies at the fabric store ask what i’m making.  never with any other material but always with the fringe.  i’m getting into the revamping of the old and turning it into bedazzled wonders.  granted i do cringe when i think about how i am taking vintage/historical pieces and turning them into painted hot glued items.   i have been known to go on a rant or two when i eyeing nice vintage items that have been disassembled with painted snowmen singing let it snow.  somehow i classify my items a tad above these.  i know snob.

the girl next door

When you are little your grandmas and aunties are women who always have apple pies ready to be eaten, bathrooms with lace shower curtains, and have an aura of saintly-ness about them.  Yet as you age, stories start to slip out and you learn that they too were once young women off on an adventure.

Nine of these works depicts a pin-up girl image named for a grandma or a great-aunt and paired with a quote that was generated by family members to describe that woman.  The tenth piece pairs a quote from Hugh Heffner with a quote from my mother.

This combination of image and text is an exploration of the question, What makes a woman a woman? Ideas, beliefs, and practices that are ingrained by both the familial and mass media are passed from generation to generation.  Inherit knowledge creates the educated, liberated, domestic goddess, inner pin-up of every young woman.

the king LIVES!

i can’t help it i’ve gotten a tad obsessed with my hot glue gun and things that sparkle. thus was born these day of the dead shrine inspired elvis candles.  up next i’m contemplating a notorious b.i.g shrine candle series. yeah baby! my favorite came when buying all the fringe, the girl doing my order was like what are you making.  when i explained she laughed and said that was NOT what she was expecting. i think i might have made her day at 10 am.
